How is Improvement Measured?

The standard (or grade) of a student is indicated by the award of coloured belts. Students begin with a white belt and progress through, yellow, green, progress from absolute beginner to black belt standard. After achieving black belt, students can continue to progress through the senior grades of black belt 1^st Dan, 2^nd Dan etc. up to 7^th Dan Grand Master.

The Belts of Tae-Kwon-Do

Tae-Kwon-Do students will be asked to wear traditional style Korean uniform (a Do-Buk) whilst training. Obviously, new students will be given the opportunity to participate in lessons without a uniform to begin with, but as uniformity is an essential element of the discipline of the art, students MUST acquire a uniform if they wish to continue training (usually after about 1-month). Uniforms for juniors cost approximately £20.00

 There are 10 belts in Tae-Kwon-Do before reaching black belt standard

1	White	(10th Kup)
2	White with yellow tags	(9th Kup)
3	Yellow	(8th Kup)
4	Yellow with green tags	(7th Kup)
5	Green	(6th Kup)
6	Green with blue tags	(5th Kup)
7	Blue	(4th Kup)
8	Blue with red tags	(3rd Kup)
9	Red	(2nd Kup)
10	Red with black tags	(1st Kup)

The colours of these belts are not arbitrary and students will need to understand the significance of each colour as they progress through their training

 

WHITE                                  
White signifies a stage of innocence, a novice student with no prior knowledge of Tae Kwon-Do.

  

YELLOW                  
Yellow signifies the earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the foundations Tae-Kwon-Do are being laid.

  

GREEN                     
Green signifies the plants growth as the Tae-Kwon-Do seed begins to develop so the student's skill develops.

  

BLUE                        
Blue signifies the Heaven or Sky towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Tae Kwon-Do progresses.

  

RED                           
Red signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise self control and warning the opponent to stay away.

  

BLACK                   
Black is the opposite of white, signifying both maturity and proficiency in Tae-Kwon-Do. It also symbolises the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.
