What is Tae-Kwon-Do?

Tae-Kwon-Do is a Korean martial art whose roots can be traced back to 50BC. The word Tae-Kwon-Do literally translates to:-

Tae – ‘To strike or block with the foot’

Kwon – ‘To strike or block with the hand’

Do – ‘The way’ or ‘the art of’

Tae-Kwon-do – ‘the way of hand and foot’

It is a disciplined martial art characterised by its fast, high spinning kicks.

The techniques are done with graceful and powerful movements and students will continuously strive to improve the artistic presentation of these techniques developing posture, grace, co-ordination and attention to detail.

From the very beginning of their training, students will be taught and encouraged to live according to the 5 tenets of Tae-Kwon-Do:-

Courtesy – be thoughtful and considerate of others.

Integrity – be honest and maintain a code of moral values and principles

Perseverance – to never give up in the pursuit of one’s goals, to welcome challenges and use these to develop and improve

Self Control – to have control of one’s body and mind, to practice controlling one’s actions and reaction

Indomitable Spirit – to have courage in the face of adversity, to never be dominated by, or have one’s spirit broken by another.
